The Classroom

As teachers we must begin to prepare our students for world where the opportunities for success require the ability to compete and cooperate on a global scale. Unfortunately, US students are very unaware of other world cutlures, issues, and foriegn languages when compared to other contries. This is a trend that needs to be stopped. We can no longer afford to be the country that is lagging behind. Students will not be successfull in the world if we don't transform the type of education they are recieving with the new global content that is out there.

There are five global trend that are transforming the context for these future generations. They fall under the categories of economics, science and technology, demograpphics, sucurity and citizenship, and education.

We need to be teaching our students these trends and languages starting in early elementary school. If this is done then they will be able to apply those skills anywhere and anytime through online learning. Teaching them to teach themselves continually. We want our students to be able to successfully be able to take courses that are offered globally no matter what the area might be in. They need to know that they are not just children of the neighborhood, but are children of the globe which takes them much further than their own little community.

Students need to be able to form partnerships with students other than those in our classroom. TO communicate with students from other parts of the world will help the students to learn through real or virtual exchanges and to hanve international learning experiences. Students have a better change to study abroud because they have already formed a relationship and connection.

Teachers can also beifit from the inernational globe. Teachers have a tendancy to share inforamtion with one another. We share assignments and thoughts about our students. Now we have the chance to communicate abroud. We can relate and share inforamtion with other teacher on an international basis. Found out ways that schools in other countries are continuously getting their students to reach benchmark or higher and how the students are meeting international standards. The questions and information we can recieve are endless.

It is vital that we start taking this inforamtion into consideration within the US school if we what our students to stand a fighting chance to compare to others on an international level.

Trends in Technology

Social Production: creating of information and artifacts.
Question: Are students improving their ability to think critically, to express themselves, and to develop usable literacy’s by participating through blogs, wikis, podcasts, video productions on sites, e-mail, texting, and shared online photo streams?
The fact that amateurs can produce the vast majority of what is found online; they do have the opportunity to express themselves. Also based on this fact, they must be able to think critically to show the difference between falls information and truth. Creations are done all the time by most students on a day by day basis just using the technology that they usually have in their pocket. A cell phone now does so much more than just making a simple phone call. It can help them to access multitudes of information and make their own creations. A simple video can be edited and published with just a few clicks of a button on the phone now. I do this all the time to share videos of my kids to family members. If I can do this so easily, you can bet that students are doing this and beyond on a daily basis.

Students, as well as anyone who wishes to try, can link together artifacts, categorize, and organize knowledge. It is not just done by domain experts.

The tools and technologies of social production tip the long-held, customary balance between creators and consumers of information and culture. (PG 82)
To work in the participatory culture means that learning will take on an active role. Producers and consumers will converge and interact in new ways. Every will participate and stand of the shoulders of others to create their own version of culture and reality. From this, new art forms emerge to create mashups. They have no artificial limits.

Social Networks: is enabled by the incredible power of networks to connect people.
Social networking technologies are powerful tools for enhancing the learning process. It is the biggest component in what it means to be educated. (I feel this statement should be true but in education we are not there yet due to fear and not having the knowledge based to teach competently with technology.) We need to remember that social networking technologies are constantly changing. Social networks are not to be though of as technologies, but as a way of connecting and relationships with people. (Even though these are for socializing it can still be used in education as a way to share information.)Important statement on page 87:
“Our national and state policies are focusing increasingly on high-stakes testing (as in determining the competency of students to go on to the next level, of teachers to teach effectively, and of administrations to manage acceptable outcome), and yet learners are posting work and reflections and assessments to carious Web locations that are, in many cases, easily discoverable through a simple Google search. How do we explain those students who seem disengaged and distracted and are underperforming in the classroom, but who may be producing highly creative, literate, and impressively intellectual content that can be easily viewed on the Web ? What is the difference between the test we give students in formal learning settings, versus the work portfolios that we discover in the informal learning spaces on the Web?”

Extremely important questions and statement. In the classroom we are told this is what will be on the test and this is what needs to be taught in the classroom. Here are the materials purchased by the district that need to be used to teach the following standards and content for the test. Unfortunately, all we are doing is preparing students for a test and not what information they will need to become successful adults in the working world. Why are we not training them on information they will need in the real world. Yes, math, reading, science, and social studies are important, but how does this apply to the students? They need to be creating items that use this type of information not for a test, but to apple to their knowledge in a way that shows its importance.Media Grids

These are great tools for fun and for education. This is a great way to allow students to build and create. We can build items that are 3-D instead of just sketching it on a piece of paper. This can be used by more than just the artistic students, but those who can visually see these creations in their heads can now create it themselves. Many games have us doing this and we just think of it as a game.

There are so many options with technology, now to just implement them into the classroom.
